Costco Says it Won’t Sell Genetically Modified Salmon

Costco has announced that it will become one of the largest sellers of organic products in the USA. This decision comes after the recent petition of Costco customers in Seattle where more than 50,000 signatures were collected in a bid to put pressure on the company not to sell genetically modified salmon anymore.

Costco joins a list of retailers who do not want to sell GM salmon, despite the decision made by the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to approve the sale of these fish.
This is the statement of Costco:
“Even though the FDA approved the sale of GM salmon, Costco has not sold and does not intend to sell GM salmon”.
The FDA has approved the sale of AquAdvantage Salmon, the genetically modified fish that grows twice as fast as normal salmon. The Federal Food and Drug Administration claims that there are no biological differences in the nutritional content of AquAdvantage Salmon when compared to the farm-raised Atlantic salmon. In addition, the FDA said that the law does not require the fish, to be labeled as engineered. The AquAdvantage Salmon is engineered by the AquaBounty Company from Massachusetts.
Other retailers such as Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Target and Kroger have also announced that they won’t sell genetically modified salmon.
